Patricia Burford Ryan is an artist and semi-retired novelist who has lived all over the United States, but who now makes her home in Austin, Texas. Pat has been painting with oils since the age of seven, and is an alumna of the San Francisco Art Institute, from which she graduated with honors. A contemporary impressionist, she works in oils, employing lively alla prima brushwork on linen, stretched canvas, and panels.
"Most of my paintings are representational, although it's more important to me to capture the way a scene feels than how it looks. To that end, I sometimes find myself veering into abstract impressionism.
"My goal as an artist is to depict the natural and man-made world in a constant state of transition. One season morphs into the next; light dissolves into shadow and dances on water; the earth shifts and resculpts itself beneath an ever-changing sky. We are changeable creatures inhabiting a changeable world, and that is what I aim to celebrate with my paintings."
